Description

Manchester United hosted Manchester City in the 198th Manchester derby at Old Trafford. United entered the match amid a transitional period under newly appointed interim head coach Michael Carrick, tasked with lifting form after recent inconsistency in the Premier League. Pre-match analysis indicated both teams had mixed recent form — City were unbeaten in their last 13 matches across competitions and second in the league, while United had struggled for wins despite resilience at home. Guardiola’s side were expected to control possession and continue their title challenge, and United aimed to exploit transitions and home advantage to halt City’s dominance. Probable lineups saw United fielding attacking threats with Bryan Mbeumo fit again after AFCON, while City’s attack was expected to feature Erling Haaland and Phil Foden. Historically City had the edge in recent derbies, but the narrative centred on United’s renewed energy under Carrick and Old Trafford advantage.

Result Description

Manchester United won 2-0 against Manchester City at Old Trafford. Second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo (65’) and Patrick Dorgu (76’) secured the victory, marking a strong start for Michael Carrick’s tenure as interim head coach. United had several earlier goals disallowed for offside but eventually broke the deadlock and doubled their lead, controlling much of the game after half-time against City’s possession-heavy play. The win ended City’s 13-match unbeaten run and boosted United’s league position, moving them temporarily into the Champions League places. City struggled to convert ball dominance into clear chances, with United defending assertively and maintaining a clean sheet.
