Il periodo di maggiore successo del Newcastle risale agli anni dal 1904 al 1910, quando vinse una FA Cup e tre dei titoli di First Division.
La squadra ha un'accesa rivalità con i vicini del Sunderland, con cui disputa il cosiddetto derby del Tyne and Wear. I calciatori e i tifosi del club sono detti Magpies (Le gazze).
