Description

The first leg of the 2025–26 UEFA Champions League knockout play-offs brings a heavyweight clash to the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon. Following a revamped league phase that saw both storied clubs finish outside the top eight, they must now battle for a spot in the Round of 16. Benfica enters the match with confidence after defeating Real Madrid earlier in the season, while the Spanish giants arrive with a star-studded lineup led by Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior. With José Mourinho on the Benfica bench facing his former club, the tactical battle and electric atmosphere in Portugal are expected to reach fever pitch.

Result Description

Real Madrid secured a vital 1–0 away victory over Benfica in a match that was defined as much by its off-field controversy as its on-field quality. The game’s only goal arrived in the 50th minute when Kylian Mbappé led a clinical counter-attack and fed Vinícius Júnior, who cut inside from the left and curled a magnificent shot into the far top corner. This slender advantage gives the Merengues a significant edge heading into the return leg at the Santiago Bernabéu next week.

The second half was marred by significant tension and a 10-minute stoppage in play. Immediately following his goal, Vinícius Júnior alerted the referee to alleged racial abuse from a section of the home crowd, prompting the activation of FIFA’s anti-racism protocol. The atmosphere remained volatile until the final whistle, with projectiles being thrown onto the pitch and Benfica manager José Mourinho receiving a red card for dissent in the 86th minute. Despite the hostile environment, the Madrid defense remained resolute, neutralizing Benfica's late pressing to see out the win.
