


As a player, Leitner played for the youth teams of UBSC Oberwart and later for the Oberwart Gunners at the senior level, as well as for the Güssing Knights in the Austrian second division (B-Bundesliga).
He worked as a coach and coordinator in Oberwart's youth program. In 2010 and 2011, he took on managerial duties for Oberwart's first division team. In 2012, he passed the exam for his A-level coaching license. In the summer of 2014, he coached Austria's U16 national team at the European Championship B-League, and in the summer of 2015, he coached the U18 national team at the European Championship B-League in his hometown of Oberwart.
In the summer of 2017, Leitner became assistant coach of the Oberwart Gunners' first team in the Austrian second division. In mid-March 2018, Leitner took over as head coach of the Oberwart Gunners after the team management parted ways with Lluis Pino Vera. In June 2018, he was officially appointed head coach. In the 2018/19 season, he was named Bundesliga Coach of the Year after leading Oberwart to the semifinals of both the league and the cup competitions. In 2024, he won the Austrian championship with his team, despite having finished the regular season of the 2023/24 season in ninth place and only securing their place in the championship round through the qualifying rounds. Shortly after winning the championship, Leitner announced his resignation as Oberwart coach.
In the summer of 2025, Leitner returned to Oberwart as coach and also took on the role of sporting director.
