The Basketball Superliga represents the highest level of professional basketball in Austria and has evolved through several organizational phases. Until 1998, league operations were managed directly by the Austrian Basketball Federation. From 1998 to 2019, the league operated independently, during which time it underwent multiple name changes reflecting structural and commercial developments.
Initially known as the A-League until the 2004/05 season, it was later renamed the Austrian Basketball Bundesliga (ÖBL). Starting in the 2008/09 season, the league adopted a title sponsor model, incorporating the main sponsor’s name into the official league title. On July 1, 2019, league governance returned to the national federation, accompanied by a rebranding to Basketball Superliga, marking a renewed strategic direction for Austrian basketball.
Media coverage expanded significantly during this period, supported by television partnerships that enabled regular live broadcasts of league games. The 2019/20 season, however, was prematurely cancelled in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in no official Austrian champion being awarded that year.
Beyond sporting matters, the league has also faced periods of scrutiny related to investigations into match-fixing and betting fraud, which had a notable impact on the Austrian basketball landscape. Despite these challenges, the Basketball Superliga has remained the country’s premier basketball competition.
In the 2024/25 season, eleven teams competed in the league. The regular season consisted of 20 rounds, after which the top six teams advanced to the placement round. The remaining teams contested a qualification round to secure the final playoff spots. The championship was decided through the playoffs, with the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals all played in a best-of-five format.
Coverage of the Basketball Superliga is supported by Austrian basketball media and fan platforms, including Basketballboard.at, which provides news, statistics, and community engagement focused on the national basketball scene.
