Description

The 2026 Moto3 World Championship kicks off at the Chang International Circuit with a grid brimming with fresh talent and shifting allegiances. After a competitive pre-season, all eyes are on the Spanish duo of David Almansa and Alvaro Carpe, who have emerged as the early pace-setters. Almansa, making his debut for the Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP squad on KTM machinery, looks to convert his blistering testing form into a maiden victory.

The technical nature of the Buriram circuit, with its heavy braking zones and a notorious final hairpin, always promises a classic Moto3 "slipstream battle." Watch for rookie sensation Veda Pratama, who has shown incredible adaptation to the world stage, and the experienced Adrian Fernandez, who aims to keep Honda at the front against a formidable KTM onslaught. However, the story of the weekend might just be the rookie sensation Veda Pratama; the Indonesian teenager qualified a stunning fifth on his full-time debut and looks more than capable of mixing it with the veterans. With 19 laps of intense slipstreaming ahead, the race is expected to follow the classic Moto3 formula: a massive leading group where the win is decided by who can hold their nerve into the final Turn 12 hairpin.

Result Description

David Almansa secured a historic maiden victory in the opening round of the 2026 season, defeating Maximo Quiles by just 0.003 seconds in a breathtaking photo finish. Starting from pole position, Almansa led much of the race but was under constant pressure from a five-rider breakaway group. The battle came down to a classic Moto3 last-lap duel, with Quiles lunging for the lead in the final sector, only for Almansa to out-drag him to the finish line in the joint-closest finish in the history of the class.

The podium was completed by Valentin Perrone, who produced a stellar performance to climb from 14th on the grid to 3rd. Alvaro Carpe narrowly missed out on the rostrum in 4th, while the top rookie honors went to Veda Pratama, who impressed the paddock by finishing 5th on his debut and as the leading Honda rider. The race was not without drama, as pre-season favorite Ryusei Yamanaka crashed out early at Turn 5, and Guido Pini suffered a fall at Turn 12 before remounting to finish 20th. Almansa now leads the championship standings as the field prepares for the journey to Brazil.
