Melissa Jefferson-Wooden of the USA came into the 200m final aiming to complete a sprint double after winning the 100m earlier in the championships. Shericka Jackson of Jamaica, the defending champion, was tipped as her biggest threat, while Amy Hunt and Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain were among those hoping to challenge for medals. The race was expected to hinge on a fast bend and maintaining form in the closing metres, with a slight headwind forecast.
