The Juan de la Barrera Olympic Gymnasium is a sports venue located in the Benito Juárez mayor's office in Mexico City, Mexico. It was inaugurated in 1968, and currently has a capacity for 5,242 spectators.
It hosted the volleyball competitions during the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico, where the delegation of the former Soviet Union managed to win the gold medal in the 2 tournaments played (male and female) beating its counterpart from Japan in the final of both. In addition, from 2017 to 2022 it was the home of the Capitanes de la Ciudad de México, a basketball team that would end up moving to the Arena Ciudad de México to compete in the NBA G League starting in the 2022/23 season.
It is part of a sports complex together with the Francisco Márquez Olympic Pool, occupying an area of 11,152 m².
The gymnasium is a quadrangular structure smaller than that of the Olympic pool based on two catenary roofs supported by large concrete columns. Underneath, the building has three levels, the first for the central competition area and the respective areas for competitors and judges; The next is the oval-shaped access level, which leads from lobbies to the courts and other facilities such as a warm-up area, showers, locker rooms and infirmary, connected by exterior ramps.2Finally, the third level is concrete grandstands with seating for 5242 spectators.
For the Olympic Games, common areas for rest and training were designed with the Olympic pool.
