The Champions League holders seized the upper hand in the 20th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia cut inside from the left flank and smashed a powerful shot into the net. Aston Villa responded right on the stroke of halftime as 17-year-old debutant Brian Madjo volleyed home a cross from John McGinn to become the youngest goalscorer in UEFA Super Cup history. PSG restored their lead in the 61st minute through Désiré Doué, who ran onto a pass from Ousmane Dembélé and finished neatly into the bottom corner, a goal eventually confirmed by VAR after an initial offside call.
