The Asian Tour and KPGA return to the prestigious Namseoul Country Club for the 45th GS Caltex Maekyung Open, beginning Thursday, 30 April 2026. Often referred to as "Korea's Masters," the primary challenge for the 138-player field is navigating the notoriously fast, back-to-front sloping greens of the old-school layout. The objective for the local Korean contingent is to maintain their historic dominance at this venue, where only a handful of international players have ever claimed victory.

Strategically, the goal for Round 1 is to remain patient on the hilly terrain. The tactical focus for defending champion Mun Do-yeob and rising star Song Min-hyuk centers on precision iron play to ensure uphill birdie putts. With the slippery greens of Namseoul demanding a deft touch, the ultimate goal for the opening 18 holes is to secure a position within the early lead group and avoid the punishing thick rough that guards the narrow fairways.

Result Description
Cho Ming-yu seized the early advantage at the GS Caltex Maekyung Open, firing a clinical 5-under-par 66 to lead after the opening round. His primary objective was to exploit the morning conditions, which he achieved by carding six birdies against a solitary bogey. Cho's performance placed him one stroke ahead of Lee Tae-hee, who posted a 65 (on a par 71) to sit in second place.

The local favorites remained well-positioned during the first day of play. Song Min-hyuk, who would eventually go on to win the tournament in a dramatic playoff, opened his campaign with a steady 3-under-par 68, leaving him just two shots off the pace. Other notable Round 1 performances included Seonghyeon Kim and Inhoi Hur, who both matched Song's 68. The international challenge was led by South Africa's Ian Snyman, who opened with a 69. By the end of the round, the tight leaderboard confirmed that accuracy over distance would be the defining factor for the week.
