The battle for the grid at the "Cathedral of Speed" moves into high gear as the FIM Supersport World Championship enters its Tissot Superpole session. The primary challenge of the TT Circuit Assen is the combination of high-speed change of direction and the critical final Geert Timmer Chicane, where a pole position lap can be won or lost in the final braking zone. The objective for the field is to maximize the performance of the single-lap Pirelli qualifying tyre on a surface that has become increasingly grippy throughout the morning sessions.

Strategically, the goal for the 34-rider field is to find a clear window of track space to avoid being hampered by slower traffic on the 4.54km layout. The tactical focus for the teams is managing the "slipstream" effect on the high-speed Veenslang backstretch, which can offer a vital tenth of a second for those who time their exit correctly. With the new generation of Supersport machinery proving to be exceptionally close in performance, the ultimate goal is to break into the 1:36 bracket to secure a front-row start for Saturday’s Race 1 and Sunday’s Race 2.

Lucas Mahias delivered a masterclass in qualifying on Friday, April 17, 2026, claiming his tenth career WorldSSP pole position at the Pirelli Dutch Round. Mahias’ primary objective was to maintain the momentum from the morning's practice, and he did so emphatically, clocking a 1:36.490 on his GMT94 Yamaha YZF-R9. Despite a brief red-flag interruption early in the session—caused by a technical crash for Xavi Cardelús—Mahias remained unfazed, returning to the track to set a pace that no one else could match.

The session was a showcase of the championship's incredible parity, with the front row separated by just 0.082 seconds. Valentin Debise continued his strong start to the season by qualifying second on the Evan Bros ZXMOTO 820RR, finishing just 0.071 seconds behind Mahias. Joining them on the front row is Albert Arenas, who secured third with a 1:36.572 in a late-session charge. Tom Booth-Amos, who briefly held the provisional pole after the restart, will head the second row in fourth, while Portimão pole-sitter Can Öncü completed the top five. With the top 15 riders covered by less than a second, the stage is set for a high-intensity battle when the lights go out for Race 1 on Saturday.
