The fight for the first pole position of the 2026 FIM Supersport World Championship takes center stage at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. The primary challenge for the grid is navigating the ultra-fast, high-commitment corners like the Southern Loop and Stoner Corner, where any slight mistake in the 15-minute session can derail a flying lap. The objective for the riders is to find a clear window of track space and a strong slipstream on the Gardner Straight to maximize the top speed of their respective machines.

Strategically, the single-session qualifying format rewards immediate speed and technical precision. The goal for Jaume Masia is to carry his dominant Friday practice form into a front-row start, while the Evan Bros Racing squad aims to prove the qualifying pace of the brand-new ZXMOTO 820RR. The tactical focus for the PTR Triumph team and home favorite Oli Bayliss is to utilize their local knowledge to master the blustery conditions off the Bass Strait. With a grid packed with former Moto3 and Moto2 talent, the ultimate goal is to break into the 1'31s and secure the best possible starting position for the weekend's double-header.

Result Description
Jaume Masia secured a dream debut pole position on Friday, February 20, 2026, by outclassing the field in a high-intensity Superpole session. Masia’s objective was to break the 1'32 barrier, and he achieved it by clocking a blistering 1'32.115 on his Orelac Racing VerdNatura Ducati. His performance placed him 0.492 seconds clear of his nearest rival, making a clear statement about his intentions for the 2026 title.

The session was a showcase for the diversity of the 2026 grid. Philipp Oettl secured a strong second place on the Feel Racing Ducati, while Valentin Debise created a sensation by placing the new ZXMOTO 820RR on the front row in its very first qualifying appearance. The second row featured Lucas Mahias, Can Öncü, and local hero Oli Bayliss, all separated by less than two-tenths of a second. The session saw some late drama as Ondrej Vostatek and Mattia Casadei both suffered minor lowsides at Turn 4 while on personal-best laps. Despite the late yellow flags, Masia’s early benchmark remained untouchable, ensuring the Spaniard starts his Supersport career from the head of the pack.
