Description

The second round at Shadow Creek presents a significant tactical shift as wind gusts exceeding 32 km/h are forecasted to sweep through the desert. The primary challenge for the field is managing ball flight on the exposed back nine, where "glass-like" green speeds make any shot missing the correct tier nearly impossible to stop. The objective for the overnight leaders is to maintain their aggressive mindset on the par-5s while practicing extreme caution on the water-heavy 17th and 18th holes.

Strategically, the round is expected to be a battle of attrition. The goal for those near the cut line—which typically hovers in the over-par range at this venue—is to prioritize "center-of-the-green" targets to avoid the penalizing bunkers and rocky brush. With the course drying out, the objective for the leaders is to protect their positions by managing their spin rates into the firming surfaces. The tactical focus remains on the par-3 17th, a hole that can easily "swing the leaderboard" by several strokes in the closing stages of the day.

Result Description

Lauren Coughlin (USA) separated herself from the world-class field with a brilliant 3-under-par 69, moving to 8-under-par total. While most of the top 20 players in the world struggled with the blustery conditions—only 11 players broke par on Friday—Coughlin showcased "masterful control," highlighted by a 50-foot birdie putt on the 8th hole and a critical 25-footer on the 16th. Her ability to remain patient through a mid-round wobble allowed her to open a commanding five-stroke cushion heading into the weekend.

The leaderboard behind her saw a significant shuffle as overnight co-leaders faltered. Leona Maguire (IRL) and Hyo Joo Kim (KOR) sit in a tie for second at 3-under-par after rounds of 71 and 73, respectively. Meanwhile, World No. 2 Nelly Korda remains in contention at 2-under-par total despite a difficult afternoon that included a double-bogey on the par-4 1st. The day was defined by the extreme difficulty of the greens, evidenced by Amelia Garvey’s massive jump; she answered an opening 79 with a 3-under 69 to move safely inside the 7-over-par cut line.
