The 2026 FIM Motocross World Championship reaches its first major milestone with Race 1 of the MXGP of Argentina. Following a high-intensity qualifying day that saw the field grappling with the brand-new, volcanic-soil circuit in Bariloche, the premier class is set for a 30-minute plus two-lap sprint. This race is a significant historical marker, as it is the first time the world championship has competed at this specific lakeside venue in Patagonia, and the first time we see the Red Bull Ducati Factory team on a Sunday start line.

All eyes are on Lucas Coenen, who enters Race 1 with the first gate pick after his stunning victory in Saturday's Qualifying Race. However, he faces the ultimate test of nerves against the sport's most decorated veterans. Jeffrey Herlings (Honda HRC Petronas) and Tim Gajser (Monster Energy Yamaha) start side-by-side, both looking to prove that their off-season brand switches have not dulled their championship-winning speed. With the soft, sandy surface expected to rut up significantly after the morning's support races, the start will be more critical than ever; those who find traction on the uphill start straight will have a massive advantage in navigating the 21 technical turns of the Bariloche track.

Result Description
Jeffrey Herlings (Honda HRC PETRONAS) delivered a masterclass in resilience and raw speed to win the opening MXGP moto of the 2026 season. After a crash in qualifying left him with a poor gate pick, the Dutchman executed a perfect start, emerging from the first turn in the top three. He methodically tracked down early leader and teammate Tom Vialle, making a decisive move through the "roller section" on lap six. Once in the lead, Herlings showcased his trademark endurance, pulling away to win by a comfortable seven-second margin and proving that his move to Honda has not diminished his "Bullet" status.

The race for the podium was a showcase of the championship's incredible depth. Tom Vialle held onto second for much of the race, holding off intense pressure from Romain Febvre (Kawasaki Racing Team). In the final two laps, Febvre utilized a superior line through the downhill rhythm section to pull alongside the rookie, but Vialle defended brilliantly to secure a historic runner-up finish in his premier class debut. Febvre settled for third, while Lucas Coenen (Red Bull KTM) and Pauls Jonass (Honda) rounded out a top five that was separated by less than fifteen seconds, setting the stage for an explosive second moto.
