Ugo Ugochukwu made an immediate statement in his debut weekend, topping the first Free Practice session of the 2026 season. The Campos Racing driver was the only competitor to break the 1m35s barrier, clocking a 1:34.607 to lead the field by a significant margin of 0.427 seconds. Ugochukwu’s performance validated the preseason hype surrounding the American youngster, as he looked comfortable navigating the dusty Albert Park surface from the outset.
The session was not without drama, as several drivers struggled with the low grip, resulting in numerous lock-ups and trips across the grass. Most notably, Mattia Colnaghi brought out a red flag with just over five minutes remaining after his MP Motorsport car suffered a mechanical failure and caught fire on the main straight. The session did not resume, cementing the top three of Ugochukwu, Brando Badoer (Rodin Motorsport), and Noah Strømsted (Trident). Théophile Naël and Alessandro Giusti rounded out the top five, while home favorite James Wharton finished 14th as he focused on a high-fuel program for PREMA Racing.
