The 2026 MotoGP pre-season enters its final chapter at the Chang International Circuit with Day 1 of the Buriram Test. This two-day session is the ultimate dress rehearsal before the season opener at this very track. For the factories, the "honeymoon phase" of testing is over; this is the deadline for aero homologation and final engine specifications.

All eyes are on the Marquez brothers following Alex’s record-shattering pace in Sepang. However, the heat in Buriram presents a different challenge, with track temperatures soaring above 40°C. Aprilia arrived with a radical "hedgehog" aero package designed to improve cooling, while Yamaha’s engineers are under immense pressure to prove that the technical gremlins that grounded their new V4 engine in Malaysia have been fully resolved. For Jorge Martín, today is particularly significant as he has finally been declared fit to ride, marking his official 2026 debut on the factory Aprilia RS-GP.

Result Description
Alex Márquez continued his sensational pre-season form, topping the first day in Buriram with a 1:29.262. The Gresini Ducati rider looked untouchable for much of the afternoon, but the session was anything but smooth for the rest of the field. His brother, reigning champion Marc Márquez, had a rollercoaster day; despite suffering two separate crashes—a fast low-side at the final corner and a gentle tip-over at Turn 5—he recovered in the final 15 minutes to secure a Ducati 1-2, finishing just 0.129 seconds behind Alex.

The session was twice red-flagged due to track conditions, including a brief delay to inspect the air fences. Franco Morbidelli rounded out an all-Ducati top three for VR46, narrowly edging out the lead Aprilia of Marco Bezzecchi. Honda showed genuine teeth as well, with Johann Zarco lunging into 5th place late in the day, proving that HRC's new chassis is competitive in high-braking zones.

For Yamaha, the day was another test of patience. While Jack Miller finished as the top M1 in 17th, Fabio Quartararo (18th) was visibly frustrated, at one point gesturing at his bike on-track after a moment of instability. Meanwhile, Jorge Martín successfully completed his first 45 laps of the year, finishing 15th as he focused on ergonomic adjustments rather than outright speed.
