The 9th edition of the Tour of Bruges—formerly known as the Classic Brugge-De Panne—took the Women's WorldTour peloton on a 143.7km journey through the heart of West Flanders. The primary challenge of the day was the relentless wind and rain, which threatened to create echelons in the exposed coastal sections heading toward Torhout. For the elite sprinters, the objective was to stay protected and avoid the "chaos" of the narrow Belgian roads, while the tactical priority for teams like SD Worx-Protime was to set up a dominant lead-out for the defending champion, Lorena Wiebes.
Strategically, the race was expected to be a controlled affair, but the objective for the field changed when a crash inside the final 5km disrupted the peloton and removed top contender Charlotte Kool from the mix. With the wet roads making the final approach to Bruges increasingly technical, the tactical priority shifted toward individual positioning rather than a clean team train. As the sprint opened up, the goal for the favorites was to find clear air, while a young British debutant looked to exploit any hesitation from the established stars.
Reports Result ListResult DescriptionIn one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 season, 19-year-old Carys Lloyd (Movistar Team) secured her first professional victory at the Tour of Bruges. Lloyd anticipated the final sprint perfectly, launching a long-range effort that caught the heavy favorites off-guard. While the pre-race favorite Lorena Wiebes found herself boxed in during the final 300 metres, Lloyd maintained a high cadence to hold off a desperate late surge from former world champion Elisa Balsamo. The victory was a historic moment for the young Brit, marking her first career win in a UCI Women's WorldTour event.
Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) finished a close second, later admitting it was "too late" by the time she found a gap to respond to Lloyd's acceleration. The podium was completed by Nienke Veenhoven (Visma-Lease a Bike), who showed impressive strength to secure third place in a blanket finish. Despite the late-race chaos, Lorena Wiebes managed to recover for a 9th-place finish, while Chiara Consonni and Shari Bossuyt rounded out the top five. The race concluded with a winning time of 3:31:23, proving that even on the flattest courses in Belgium, a bold tactical move can overcome the fastest legs in the world.
