Description

The 2019 NBA Skills Challenge in Charlotte features a bracket-style format designed to test ball-handling, passing, and shooting. The field is a perfect split between agile guards and versatile big men. Representing the guards are Trae Young, Luka Dončić, De'Aaron Fox, and Mike Conley. Challenging them are the "point-forwards" and centers: Jayson Tatum, Nikola Jokić, Nikola Vučević, and Kyle Kuzma. All eyes are on the rookie sensation Dončić and the local favorite Kemba Walker's teammate, though the "bigs" have historically dominated this obstacle course in recent years.

Result Description
Jayson Tatum pulled off one of the most improbable finishes in Skills Challenge history to claim the 2019 title. In the championship round against Trae Young, Tatum found himself trailing as Young approached the final three-point station. Recognizing he was behind, Tatum launched a desperation heave from the half-court line that banked in, beating Young to the target and securing the trophy.

Tatum’s path to the finals included comeback wins over Mike Conley and Nikola Jokić. On the other side of the bracket, Trae Young advanced by defeating De'Aaron Fox and Luka Dončić. Despite the guards showing superior speed through the slalom and passing stations, Tatum’s "logo shot" continued the trend of frontcourt players winning the event, marking the fourth time in five years a non-guard has taken the crown.
