The final event of the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia season commenced at The National Golf Club on the Mornington Peninsula. The primary challenge for the field on the Gunnamatta Course was a brutal combination of high winds and persistent rain, described by some veterans as the most difficult conditions they had faced in their careers. For the 108-player field, the objective was to survive the elements and secure a strong position in the Order of Merit, which determines playing rights for the following season.

Strategically, the first round was a test of "survival golf" rather than scoring. The objective for the early and late starters alike was to minimize damage, as the coastal winds made club selection nearly impossible on the more exposed holes of the Tom Doak layout. With the top 50 in the Order of Merit hanging in the balance for many, the tactical priority was keeping the ball low and avoiding the treacherous sandy scrub. As the worst of the weather battered the course, the goal shifted from birdie hunting to simply finishing the round with the card intact.

Result Description
Josh Armstrong produced a masterclass in adverse conditions, carding a remarkable 4-under 68 to take the solo lead after the opening round. Amidst gusts that pushed many of the field into the high 70s and 80s, Armstrong managed four birdies in a display of "creative shot-making." His ability to navigate the worst of the weather put him one stroke clear of the field and significantly boosted his projected standing in the Order of Merit.

The leaderboard reflected just how difficult the conditions were, with only a handful of players breaking par. New Zealand's Mako Thompson and Sydney's John Lyras shared second place at 3-under 69, while veteran Matthew Griffin sat in fourth with a gritty 2-under 70. Several of the season's top performers struggled to find their rhythm in the wind, including Cameron John, who opened with a 1-over 73. The performance of the day, however, belonged to Armstrong, whose bogey-free stretch on the back nine was the only one of its kind during the first round.
