The 105th New Zealand Open presented by Millbrook Resort tees off in Arrowtown, bringing together a diverse field of 156 professionals and high-profile amateurs for the country's flagship golf event. Contested across the stunning Coronet and Remarkables courses, the tournament features a unique Pro-Am format that adds a layer of entertainment to the high-stakes competition. Local hopes are pinned on the likes of Daniel Hillier and Steven Alker as they aim to break a nine-year drought for a home champion. They face a formidable international challenge, including five-time PGA Tour winner Kevin Na making his tournament debut and defending champion Ryan Peake. With a field that blends seasoned veterans with rising stars like Kazuma Kobori, the opening round at Millbrook promises technical drama against one of the most picturesque backdrops in world golf.

Result Description
Australia's Matias Sanchez mastered the shifting conditions at Millbrook Resort to claim the clubhouse lead after a rain-affected opening round. Following an overnight soaking that delayed the start of play by three hours, Sanchez carded a bogey-free 7-under-par 64 on the Remarkables course, finding his rhythm late in the day as the winds subsided. He holds a one-stroke advantage over a group of pursuers that includes the highest-ranked local favorite, Daniel Hillier, and American debutant Kevin Na, who both finished with solid 5-under-par rounds.

The day was marked by a blend of veteran resilience and amateur brilliance. Christchurch teenager Yuki Miya emerged as the surprise package of the round, sitting at 6-under-par with five holes remaining when play was suspended for darkness. Other notable performances came from Wade Ormsby, who also posted a 5-under 66, while 2017 champion Michael Hendry and local star Ben Campbell remain firmly in the hunt. With many players still to complete their opening 18 holes, the second day will be a marathon of golf as the field looks to catch Sanchez on the leaderboard.
