Description
The 2026 AUTOBACS SUPER GT series kicks off at the technical Okayama International Circuit, a 3.7-kilometer track known for its tight corners and limited passing opportunities. The primary challenge for the 2026 season opener is the debut of Honda’s new HRC Prelude-GT in the GT500 class, replacing the outgoing NSX-GT platform. Sho Tsuboi and Kenta Yamashita began their title defense in perfect fashion on Sunday, April 12, 2026, by winning the Okayama GT 300km Race. The No. 36 au TOM’S Toyota GR Supra team’s objective was to spoil the pole-winning party of the Cerumo squad, and they executed a clinical strategy to do so. After Yamashita kept the leaders in sight during the opening stint, Tsuboi took over and made a decisive pass around the outside of Rikuto Kobayashi at Attwood Curve on Lap 38. Once in the lead, Tsuboi checked out, crossing the finish line with a massive 19.8-second margin of victory.
The race for the remaining podium spots was a highlight-reel battle of tire management and traffic navigation. Rikuto Kobayashi held on to secure second place in his GT500 debut alongside Toshiki Oyu, completing a 1-2 sweep for the Toyota GR Supra. The final spot on the podium went to the No. 12 TRS Impul Nissan Z, with Bertrand Baguette and Kazuki Hiramine charging from seventh on the grid to third. Honda’s new Prelude-GT had a quiet debut, with the No. 16 ARTA car of Tomoki Nojiri and Ren Sato finishing as the best-placed Honda in sixth. In the GT300 class, the D'station Vantage GT3 converted pole into a win, fending off a late charge from the LEON Pyramid AMG.
