The fifth race of the 2026 Repco Supercars Championship is set to be a classic high-speed confrontation on the streets of Melbourne. Following a dramatic opening day at the Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit, all eyes are on the front row as pole-sitter Matthew Payne looks to extend his newly acquired championship lead. Payne, representing Penrite Racing, secured his second pole of the weekend and appears to have the pace to challenge the heavy hitters.
Starting alongside him is the man who dominated the previous race, Brodie Kostecki. Despite battling a persistent illness, Kostecki’s Shell V-Power Mustang has been the car to beat in the high-speed sectors of the revised Melbourne layout. The grid behind them is a mix of veteran experience and rookie sensation, including Ryan Wood, who has shown incredible adaptation to the Toyota Supra. With no compulsory pit stops in this 19-lap sprint, the start and the defense through the Turn 9-10 chicane will likely decide who lifts the trophy in front of the global Formula 1 audience.

Brodie Kostecki delivered another masterclass in defensive driving to secure his second victory of the Melbourne SuperSprint, winning a chaotic Race 5 by just half a second. While Matthew Payne got a "dream launch" from pole to lead early, Kostecki remained patient, stalking the Penrite Ford before executing a clinical pass at Turn 11 on the fifth lap. From there, Kostecki managed the gap perfectly, even as Payne launched a desperate final-lap charge that saw him pull alongside at the finish line.
The race behind the leaders was a scene of absolute carnage. A major multi-car incident at Turn 3 saw Macauley Jones and Zach Bates spun out for the second time this weekend, while championship contender Will Brown saw his race ruined after a botched move on Cooper Murray sent both cars into the gravel trap. The highlight for many was Ryan Wood, who secured a historic first Supercars podium for Toyota, finishing third after surviving a wild off-track excursion at Turn 9. Cam Waters and Kai Allen rounded out the top five in a race that saw favorites like Broc Feeney and Chaz Mostert drop back due to penalties and steering damage.
