Description
The 2026 WorldSBK season-opener reaches its first major milestone as the field prepares for the lights to go out for Race 1 at Phillip Island. After a winter of intensive development and a series of dominant practice sessions, the premier class is ready to battle for the first 25-point haul of the year. The legendary 4.4km circuit, known for its ultra-fast sweeps and punishing demand on rear tires, will provide the ultimate test for the refined Ducati Panigale V4 R and the competitive debut of the Bimota KB998 Rimini. With a grid packed with hungry talent and several riders eyeing their first-ever podiums, the opening 22 laps of the season promise high-speed drama from start to finish.

Nicolo Bulega delivered a flawless performance to secure a lights-to-flag victory in the opening race of the 2026 season. Starting from pole position, the Aruba.it Racing – Ducati rider fended off an initial challenge into Turn 1 and immediately began gapping the field. By the midpoint of the 22-lap contest, Bulega had established a comfortable cushion, eventually crossing the line 4.776 seconds ahead of his nearest rival. The victory marks his 21st career win, moving him level with Italian legend Max Biaggi on the all-time list.
The podium was an all-Italian affair, as Yari Montella and Lorenzo Baldassarri both secured their maiden WorldSBK rostrum finishes. Montella, riding for the Barni Spark Racing Team, maintained a steady second place for the duration of the race, never quite able to match Bulega’s record-breaking pace but comfortably clear of the battle behind him. Baldassarri produced a spirited ride for Team GoEleven, climbing from seventh on the grid to clinch third place after a tense late-race defense against the charging Bimota of Axel Bassani.
