The 115th Investec South African Open Championship returns to the heart of the Cape Winelands at the historic Stellenbosch Golf Club for the first time since 1999. As the second-oldest national open in the world, this year’s edition carries unprecedented stakes: for the first time in history, the winner receives a direct invitation to the Masters at Augusta National. The field is a compelling mix of global star power and local legends, headlined by world No. 18 Patrick Reed, who arrives in blistering form after two DP World Tour wins already this season. He faces a formidable South African contingent led by five-time champion Ernie Els and defending champion Dylan Naidoo. With three spots also available for The 154th Open at Royal Birkdale, the pressure on the tight, vineyard-lined fairways of Stellenbosch will be immense from the very first tee.
Reports Result ListResult DescriptionThe opening round of the South African Open concluded with a crowded leaderboard as four players fired matching rounds of 5-under-par 65. Spain’s Alejandro Del Rey set the early clubhouse target, overcoming a shaky start with a run of four consecutive birdies to turn his round around. He was eventually joined at the summit by Finland’s Oliver Lindell, who carded a flawless bogey-free round, as well as Englishman Joe Dean and home favorite Dean Burmester. Burmester, the 2023 champion, delighted the local galleries with an aggressive display that included seven birdies, briefly holding the outright lead before a late stumble.
While the leaders found their rhythm, some of the tournament’s biggest names had more measured starts. Five-time champion Ernie Els thrilled fans with a vintage eagle at the par-5 5th but finished with an opening 71. Tournament favorite Patrick Reed also sits at 1-over par after a challenging day on the greens, leaving him six shots adrift. Meanwhile, Japan's Rikuya Hoshino provided one of the day's highlights with a spectacular hole-out for birdie at the 4th, joining a large group tied for 19th at 3-under par. With conditions expected to remain firm and fast, the stage is set for a high-scoring second round as the field battles to make the 36-hole cut.
