Description

The 2025 women’s London Marathon featured one of the deepest fields in the event’s history. Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia arrived as the favourite after silver medals in London 2024 and at the Paris Olympics. Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands, Joyciline Jepkosgei of Kenya, and Megertu Alemu were also expected to contend, while Eilish McColgan made her long-awaited marathon debut. Conditions were forecast to be mild and dry, giving hope for fast times and possibly a record in a women-only race.

Result Description
Tigst Assefa delivered a commanding performance, breaking clear after 35 km to win in 2:15:50, setting a new women-only marathon world record. Joyciline Jepkosgei finished second in 2:18:44 and Sifan Hassan was third in 2:19:00. Haven Hailu ran a personal best of 2:19:17 for fourth, and Vivian Cheruiyot rounded out the top five in 2:22:32. McColgan impressed in her debut, finishing eighth in 2:24:25 as the first British runner. Warm, calm weather helped the leaders maintain a strong pace, and Assefa’s decisive surge over the final kilometres secured her first London title.
