Description

The women’s 400 metres final promised one of the most competitive races of the championships. Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic arrived as defending champion and in top form. Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain, a former world champion, was also back at her best. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone of the USA, dominant in the 400m hurdles, was chasing her first flat-400m title and had looked strong through the rounds. Wet conditions were expected to make pacing and control on the home straight crucial.

Result Description

The final produced an extraordinary display of one-lap running. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone surged clear off the final bend to win in 47.78 seconds, setting a Championship Record and the fastest time in the event for four decades. Marileidy Paulino chased hard to take silver in 47.98, one of the quickest times of her career. Salwa Eid Naser earned bronze with 48.19, completing a podium where all three athletes broke 48.50 despite damp conditions. McLaughlin-Levrone’s performance confirmed her as a rare talent across both hurdles and the flat 400 metres, while Paulino and Naser underlined the depth at the top of the event.
