Description

The Tokyo World Championships 10,000m final promised a showdown between Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet, the Olympic champion and world record holder, and Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay, the defending world champion. Italy’s Nadia Battocletti, Kenya’s Agnes Jebet Ngetich and Ethiopia’s Ejgayehu Taye were also in contention. Tactics and a well-timed finish were expected to decide the medals.

Result Description
Beatrice Chebet delivered, claiming gold in 30:37.61 after a controlled race and a decisive kick over the last kilometre. Battocletti set an Italian record of 30:38.23 to take silver, while Tsegay earned bronze in 30:39.65. Ngetich finished fourth and Taye fifth. The pace stayed steady for most of the race before Chebet surged clear late, holding off Battocletti and Tsegay to win her first world title at the distance.
