Description The Sentry Tournament of Champions is the calendar-year opening tournament of golf's PGA Tour season, played in Hawaii on the island of Maui. The tournament was founded in 1953; its field is restricted to golfers who won a tournament on the tour during the previous calendar year. From 1986 through 2013, it was the opening event of each tour season; the PGA Tour switched to its wrap-around season (starting season in September and ending in August) in the fall of 2013.
The 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions final leaderboard is headed by winner Harris English, who earned his first PGA Tour victory since 2013 with a playoff win at Kapalua Resort's Plantation Course in Hawaii.
English defeated Joaquin Niemann on the first playoff hole with a birdie 4 on the par-5 18th, capping off the win when Niemann didn't birdie the hole.
The Tournament of Champions field is usually composed of winners from the previous year and English would not have qualified for it but the field was expanded this year to include players who reached the Tour Championship because of the 3-month pandemic shut down. His win this week guarantees his return to Hawaii next year.
