The Washington Freedom are an American professional Twenty20 cricket team that competes in Major League Cricket (MLC). The team is based in Washington, D.C. and was announced in 2023 as one of six inaugural franchises to play in Major League Cricket. The Freedom's minor league affiliate – the Baltimore Royals (formerly named the DC Hawks) – also separately play in MLC's developmental league, Minor League Cricket. The Freedom is owned by Indian American entrepreneur Sanjay Govil.

The team plans to have their home ground at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. The stadium is planned to host both cricket and baseball games and support up to 12,000 spectators upon its completion in summer 2025. The team is coached by Greg Shipperd – who currently coaches the Sydney Sixers – and is captained by Sixers captain Moises Henriques.

George Mason University (George Mason, Mason, or GMU) is a public research university in Fairfax County, Virginia. The university was originally founded in 1949 as a Northern Virginia regional branch of the University of Virginia. Named after Founding Father of the United States George Mason in 1959, it became an independent university in 1972. The school has since grown into the largest public university in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Mason operates four campuses and one retreat-conference center in Virginia - in Fairfax, Arlington, Front Royal, Prince William, and Lorton respectively -, as well as a campus in Incheon, South Korea. The flagship campus is in Fairfax.

The university is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity". Two professors were awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics during their time at George Mason University: James M. Buchanan in 1986 and Vernon L. Smith in 2002.

EagleBank Arena, a 10,000-seat arena and concert venue operated by the university, is located on the Fairfax campus. The university recognizes 500 student groups as well as 41 fraternities and sororities.
