Description
Robert Józef Kubica born 7 December 1984 is a Polish racing driver. Arguably the most well-known figure in the WRC, Kubica found fame in Formula One and in 2005 became the first Polish driver to compete in the championship.
Between 2006 and 2009 he drove for the BMW Sauber team. He won the Canadian GP in 2008, and finished fourth in the drivers’ championship before a disappointing 2009 prompted a fruitful switch to Renault in 2010.
Passionate about motorsport in all its forms, the Pole spent the off-season competing in rallies. But on 6 February 2011, he was seriously injured in a horrific crash at the Italian Championship Ronde di Andora rally.
After more than a year of rehabilitation, much of it focused on his injured right arm and hand, he returned to motorsport in September 2012, winning the Italian Ronde Gomitolo Di Lana rally with his right arm still bandaged.
In 2013, with his circuit racing career on hold due to his injuries, Kubica threw himself into rallying instead. He tackled a packed season of European and World Championship events in an RRC-spec Citroën DS 3 specially adapted with a steering wheel-mounted gearshift system.
He impressed from the off, and went on to wrap up the WRC 2 title with five event wins and a remarkable fifth overall on the asphalt ADAC Rallye Deutschland.
Eager to prove himself at the top-level, he returned in 2014 for a full season in the World Rally Car class. He switched from Citroën to an M-Sport Ford Fiesta RS and replaced his former co-driver Maciek Baran with Maciej Szczepaniak. But it proved to be a difficult year, most notable for the number of crashes the pair had. There were flashes of brilliance as well, but all too often these were followed by an appearance on the Rally 2 list.
Some felt the lack of success would lead Kubica to pull the plug on his rally career. Instead, he announced a more ambitious programme for 2015, with another full season in a Fiesta RS World Rally Car, this time run by his own Italian-based RK World Rally Team.
