Fremantle and Brisbane meet at the MCG for the 2026 AFL Grand Final in a matchup loaded with contrasting historical stakes. The Dockers return to the premiership decider for only the second time in club history, chasing their first AFL flag after falling short in 2013, while Brisbane enter their fourth consecutive Grand Final seeking a remarkable third straight premiership after triumphs in 2024 and 2025. Fremantle arrive having already beaten the Lions during the home-and-away season and possess one of the competition’s most dangerous forward combinations, while Brisbane bring unrivalled recent finals experience and a core accustomed to performing on the biggest stage. With Fremantle chasing an inaugural premiership and the Lions attempting to complete a modern-era three-peat, the 2026 Grand Final carries genuine historical significance before the opening bounce.

Result Description
Brisbane completed one of the most extraordinary comebacks in AFL Grand Final history, defeating Fremantle 96-89 to secure a third consecutive premiership at the MCG. The contest remained finely balanced for most of the afternoon before Fremantle appeared to seize control late, opening a 17-point lead with less than five minutes remaining and moving within touching distance of the club’s first flag. Brisbane refused to concede, however, producing four unanswered goals through Charlie Cameron, Zac Bailey and two from Logan Morris to overturn the deficit in a remarkable final surge. Morris kicked both the go-ahead and sealing goals in the closing moments as the Lions completed their 2024-26 three-peat. Fremantle’s Shai Bolton was awarded the Norm Smith Medal despite the defeat, becoming the first player from a losing Grand Final side to win the award since 2005.
