The 2026 FIA Formula 2 Championship kicks off its season with a high-stakes qualifying session at the Albert Park Circuit. With several high-profile rookies joining the grid, including IndyCar standout Colton Herta and Alpine junior Gabriele Minì, the half-hour shootout is expected to be a frantic search for track position. Albert Park is a semi-permanent street circuit that punishes the smallest errors, particularly at the high-speed Turn 9-10 chicane.

Track evolution will play a massive role as the Formula 1 rubber continues to lay down, meaning the final seconds of the session are likely to see the fastest times. Drivers must navigate the dual challenge of finding clear air among 22 cars and managing the Medium Pirelli tires to ensure they have peak grip for their one "golden lap."

Result Description
Dino Beganovic secured a dramatic pole position for the 2026 season opener, delivering a stunning 1:28.695 in the final seconds of a disrupted session. The DAMS Lucas Oil driver thrived under immense pressure, snatching the top spot from the Rodin Motorsport duo of Martinius Stenshorne and Alex Dunne, who had briefly held a provisional 1-2. Beganovic’s final flyer saw him set purple sectors in the first and third portions of the track, beating Stenshorne by 0.216 seconds.

The session was far from smooth, twice halted by red flags that tested the drivers' mental resilience. The first interruption came ten minutes in when PREMA’s Mari Boya crashed heavily at Turn 12, causing significant damage to his car. A second red flag was triggered later when practice pacesetter Gabriele Minì suffered a mechanical failure, leaving him stranded on track and relegating him to the back of the grid for both races. Colton Herta managed a respectable 14th in his debut qualifying, while Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak secured 10th place, which grants him pole position for Saturday's reversed-grid Sprint Race.
