The second round of the 2026 WorldSBK season brought the paddock to the "rollercoaster" of the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimão. The primary challenge for the field was mastering the extreme elevation changes and the technical, high-speed final turn that leads onto the main straight. For polesitter Nicolò Bulega, the objective was to maintain his flawless start to the season, while the tactical priority for his Aruba.it Racing – Ducati teammate, Iker Lecuona, was to overcome a string of poor starts and challenge for his first podium in factory red.
Strategically, the 20-lap race was expected to be a test of tire endurance on the abrasive Portuguese tarmac. The objective for home hero Miguel Oliveira, making his second appearance for ROKiT BMW Motorrad, was to use his local knowledge to bridge the gap to the dominant Ducatis. With the new 2026 fuel-flow regulations tightening the performance window, the goal for the field was to manage engine mapping and tire wear through the demanding Sector 3 to ensure enough "punch" for a slipstream battle on the finish line.

Result DescriptionNicolò Bulega continued his imperious form by claiming a dominant victory in Race 1, extending his winning streak to eight consecutive races. Bulega converted his pole position—set with a new lap record of 1:38.495—into an immediate lead and never looked back, eventually crossing the line 2.522 seconds ahead of the field. The victory was a landmark moment for the Italian, as he equaled Carlos Checa’s career win tally and secured Ducati’s 1200th podium in WorldSBK history.
The battle for the remaining podium spots provided the day's primary drama. Iker Lecuona secured a 1-2 finish for the factory Ducati squad, marking his first podium in 531 days and his first since joining the team. He was pushed to the limit by Miguel Oliveira, who delighted the local fans by taking third place. This result made Oliveira the 138th rider to achieve a WorldSBK rostrum and the first Portuguese rider to do so on home soil. Behind them, the Lowes brothers had a productive day, with Alex finishing fourth on the new Bimota by Kawasaki and Sam taking an impressive fifth despite nursing a wrist injury.
