It was the 16th and penultimate round of the 2002 Formula One World Championship and the third United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis. Ferrari driver Rubens Barrichello won the 73-lap race after starting second. His teammate Michael Schumacher finished second and McLaren's David Coulthard was third. The 0.011-second margin of victory was the second-closest in Formula One history at the time. Michael Schumacher, who had led most of the race, eased off the throttle on the final lap, allowing Barrichello to pull alongside and ultimately win by the narrowest margin. This act was widely interpreted as an attempt to repay Barrichello for a controversial team order earlier in the season at the Austrian Grand Prix.
