The inaugural event was played 37 years ago in 1983 and the age minimum is 50, the standard for men's senior professional golf tournaments. The winner gains entry into the following season's Players Championship on the PGA Tour. Unlike the U.S. Senior Open, the Senior PGA Championship, and the Senior Open Championship, it is not recognized as a major by the European Senior Tour, and is not part of that tour's schedule. From 2019 to 2022, the Senior Players championship will be held at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio to replace the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational that is moving to Memphis, Tennessee. Jerry Kelly seized control at the Bridgestone SENIOR PLAYERS Championship with a hole-in-one on the 12th hole at Firestone, sending him to a 1-under 69 and a two-shot victory Sunday for his first major on the PGA TOUR Champions. His only big mistake came on the 18th when he could afford it. He found a bunker off the tee, his next shot hit a tree and dropped into rough below the limbs.
